The need for strong, independent local journalism is more urgent than ever. Please support the city we love by joining Friends of Willamette Week. As much a tribute to the beauty of our fair city as a ballad to the seismic feels sparked by first love, just-released high school rom-com Young Hearts might seem like the sort of slice-of-life story to have sprung from the mind of an exceptionally talented Portland teen. But Sarah and Zachary Ray Sherman, the locally raised brother-sister team behind the film, are well past adolescence. Still, the two manage to capture the essence of a coming-of-age romance in what is Sarah Sherman's screenwriting and directing debut and Zachary Ray Sherman's second time behind the camera. Though the role of "filmmaker" may be new, the siblings have spent years in the industry.

The teenager romance is a pretty common convention these days, ranging from the weepy melodrama to the raunchy comedy version of the same story. Who is the target audience? Most of these teenage films are targeted to that same demographic, so what teenager wants to see a realistic portrayal of their lives?
Young Hearts has the purest of intentions. Set in autumn in Portland, outdoor scenes have a colorful, orange warmth to them. A young couple in love, Harper Anjini Taneja Azhar and Tilly Quinn Liebling wrestle among freshly fallen leaves as sun rays peek through the clouds. I expect that they wanted to create a sweet and affecting account of kids these days, played by actual kids, who talk like actual kids.
